Obverse description Central field features the bearded bust of Jesús Jiménez, President of Costa Rica and architect of the nation's public education reforms, facing three-quarters to the right, with his name inscribed to the right of the portrait. To the left of the bust, a sculptural group in low relief depicts a teacher instructing pupils, symbolizing the centenary of free and compulsory education. The commemorative legend arcs around the upper periphery, with the dates 1869 and 1969 flanking the portrait, and the denomination 500 COLONES inscribed prominently across the lower field. The coin is bordered by a beaded inner rim.
