Issued to mark the 150th anniversary of Central American independence from Spain, this note was a commemorative issue rather than a routine addition to the circulating series — an unusual choice given that Costa Rica rarely used its currency for such occasions. The American Bank Note Company had printed Costa Rican issues for decades by this point, and the relationship was well-established, but the format here — 168 × 155 mm — is notably square for the denomination, suggesting the design was commissioned specifically for this printing rather than adapted from an existing plate.
Pick 245 is not common in high grades; the large sheet size made folding damage almost inevitable in everyday handling.
