Huangmei opera originated in the Huangmei County region of Hubei before migrating north into Anhui province, where it developed into one of China's five major operatic traditions. The People's Bank has issued themed cultural series coins with some regularity, but the Huangmei subject is narrower than the broader Kunqu or Peking Opera releases — reflecting a deliberate push in the mid-2010s to document regional performance traditions before their practitioner base further declined.
