Wanggon — posthumously titled Taejo — founded the Goryeo dynasty in 918 after unifying the Later Three Kingdoms, giving the peninsula the name by which it would eventually reach the West. North Korea has issued commemorative gold in his name partly to assert dynastic continuity with a pre-division Korean identity, sidestepping the ideological complications of more recent history.
KM#815 is a collector-targeted issue with negligible circulation history.
