Austria issued this coin to commemorate the 1964 Winter Olympics held in Innsbruck — the first Winter Games awarded to an Austrian city, secured after a 1959 IOC vote in Munich. Innsbruck had lost its bid for the 1960 Games to Squaw Valley just two years earlier, making the successful bid politically significant for the Austrian government.
A warm winter forced organizers to truck in snow from Yugoslavia and the Italian Alps, a logistical scramble that became one of the more discussed stories of those Games.
