Baku in 1918 was one of the most contested cities on earth — seized by the Baku Commune in April, briefly held by British forces as "Dunsterforce" from August, and retaken by Ottoman-backed Azerbaijani troops in September, before the Red Army ultimately consolidated control. This note was issued by the Soviet of the Baku City Economy during the Commune period, a matter of weeks before the entire administration collapsed and its commissars were executed at Krasnovodsk.
Local emergency issues of this kind were never intended as durable currency. The Baku Commune lasted 137 days.
