The Saint George gold series was introduced by the Bank of Russia in 2006 as a bullion coin deliberately positioned to compete with the Krugerrand and Maple Leaf in the international market. Unlike most Russian commemorative gold, these were designed from the outset for investment rather than collection — no mintage caps, continuous re-striking across years, and pricing tied directly to spot. The CBR has reissued the design annually with minimal variation, which keeps secondary-market premiums tight and liquidity high.
Coins from different years within the series are functionally interchangeable for bullion purposes, though date collectors have noted that certain years carried lower actual mintage figures despite the open-ended authorization.
