Part of Russia's long-running regional series, this issue commemorates Nizhny Novgorod's 800th anniversary. Founded in 1221 by Grand Prince Yuri II at the confluence of the Oka and Volga rivers, the city served for centuries as a critical eastern trading post — its annual Makaryev Fair, relocated there in 1817 after a catastrophic fire destroyed its original monastery site, was once the largest trade fair in the world by volume.
