Founded in 1221 by Grand Prince Yuri II at the confluence of the Oka and Volga rivers, the city served for centuries as a critical eastern trading post — its annual Makaryev Fair, relocated there in 1817 after a catastrophic fire destroyed its original monastery site, was once the largest trade fair in the world by volume.
