| Obverse description | Central device depicts the Sudanese national emblem, a secretary bird with wings displayed, clutching a shield on its breast and a ribbon scroll inscribed in Arabic above. The Gregorian year 1977 appears to the lower left of the eagle and the Hijri year 1397 to the lower right. A curved Arabic legend arcs around the upper field commemorating the eighth anniversary of the May 25th Revolution, while a further Arabic inscription curves along the lower field identifying the Democratic Republic of Sudan.
