Egypt's national library, Dar al-Kutub, was founded in 1870 under Khedive Ismail with a core collection built partly from manuscripts confiscated from private estates. The institution eventually merged with the National Archives in 2000 to form the body commemorated here — a bureaucratic union that proved contentious among archivists and librarians who felt the two mandates were incompatible.
