Emergency prisoner-of-war scrip, issued by a Romanian battalion unit designated A.A.B. and quartered in or near Strasbourg during the First World War. The issuing authority here is the battalion itself — not a bank, not a municipal body — which places this firmly in the category of captive or auxiliary troop currency, produced to manage internal transactions and prevent German currency from circulating freely among non-German personnel.
The handstamp was the only authentication mechanism, meaning forgery control depended entirely on physical access to the stamp itself. Notes of this type rarely survived demobilization in any quantity.
