Mannschaftsgefangenenlager Merseburg was an enlisted men's prisoner-of-war camp — the "Mannschaft" designation specifically excluded officer prisoners, who were housed separately and subject to different internment regulations under the 1907 Hague Convention. Camp scrip of this type was issued to control what prisoners could purchase within the canteen system, and to prevent German currency from accumulating in enemy hands. The 1918 date places this squarely in the final year of the war, when the German camp administration was simultaneously managing mass prisoner intake from the collapsing Western Front.
Locally printed camp issues from this period were produced with minimal supervision over design or quality, and no two Merseburg denominations appear to have used the same printer's stock.
