The XIV. Armeekorps Inspectorate at Karlsruhe administered prisoner-of-war camps across Baden, and this 50-Pfennig note was issued as internal camp currency — a practical instrument for controlling what prisoners could purchase and preventing German currency from circulating inside the wire. Camp scrip of this type was not legal tender by any measure; its validity ended at the camp boundary, and unspent notes were theoretically surrendered upon repatriation.
Karlsruhe camp issues from 1914–18 are among the more frequently encountered German PoW Lagergeld, partly because Baden's camps held large numbers of French and Belgian prisoners who sometimes retained scrip as souvenirs.
