The Centenario was designed to commemorate the centennial of Mexican independence, with the first strikes dated 1921. Production was interrupted and then revived repeatedly through the twentieth century as the coin became a bullion vehicle rather than a commemorative piece. The 1943 date falls within a sustained restrike campaign driven largely by post-war gold demand and U.S. Treasury purchases of Mexican gold coinage.
Restrikes bearing dates from 1943 onward are officially sanctioned by the Casa de Moneda and are considered legal tender, though they were never intended for general circulation. The restrike program ran continuously into the 1970s.
