The Moncada Barracks attack of July 26, 1953 — the failed assault led by Fidel Castro that killed or captured most of the roughly 160 participants — gave the revolutionary movement its name and its founding mythology. Castro's subsequent trial, where he delivered the "History Will Absolve Me" speech, transformed a military defeat into a political asset. This coin was issued during Cuba's ongoing commemorative gold program of the late 1980s, a period when the state was simultaneously selling hard-currency numismatic pieces abroad while the domestic peso economy deteriorated ahead of the Soviet collapse.
