Jersey's 50 pence coinage went through a quiet but consequential revision in 1997 when the island reduced the physical size of the coin in line with the United Kingdom's own downsizing, which had occurred in 1997 as well. Jersey, as a Crown dependency, consistently mirrors British coinage reforms without being legally obligated to do so — a practical decision driven by the islands' close economic integration with the mainland. The KM#58.2 designation distinguishes this smaller-flan version from its predecessor, the two sharing the same Raphael Maklouf effigy of Elizabeth II.
