Churchill's connection to Alderney is specific and grim: the island was entirely evacuated in June 1940 on his direct orders, days before German forces landed and established what became the only Nazi-occupied British soil of the war. Alderney's postwar depopulation left it legally distinct from the other Channel Islands, which is part of why its coinage issues — struck as legal tender but produced entirely for the collector market — carry a particular historical charge that most Crown dependencies lack.
