The "Flying Car" fifty pence is part of the Royal Mint's ongoing Innovation in Science series, which has used the denomination since 2009 to commemorate British contributions to technology and discovery. The 50p's eleven-sided form — established by the Decimal Currency Act 1969 — has made it a deliberate canvas for these themed issues, its unusual geometry lending a certain collectability that round coins rarely achieve in the same way.
Struck in the first full year of Charles III coinage production at scale, 2025 issues carry his Jody Clark effigy, introduced across the reign from 2023 onward.
