Banca Provinciale Lombarda was a mid-tier regional institution based in Bergamo, and these 50 Lire notes belong to the brief Italian emergency token-note phenomenon of the 1970s, when chronic coin shortages drove banks, municipalities, and even private businesses to issue small-denomination paper substitutes. By 1977 the state had moved to regularize and then terminate the practice, meaning many of these issues had short authorization windows — this one among them.
Calcografia e Cartevalori (operating under the Coen name) was a Milan commercial security printer responsible for a substantial portion of the Italian fiduciary token output during this period, not a national bank printer.
