The "Candle of Gratitude" is a Moldovan memorial tradition observed annually on the last Sunday of August, when candles are lit to commemorate victims of Soviet deportations — particularly the mass deportations of 1949, known as Operation South, during which over 35,000 Moldovans were forcibly relocated to Siberia and Central Asia in a single 72-hour period.
