This coin marks the 25th anniversary of the February 1948 coup — known in official Czechoslovak historiography as "Victorious February" — in which the Communist Party, backed by Soviet pressure and street-level militia action, forced President Beneš to accept a fully communist cabinet and effectively ended the country's postwar democratic experiment. The anniversary was a centerpiece of Husák's normalization program, a deliberate reframing of 1948 as liberation rather than takeover.
The .700 silver alloy was standard for Czechoslovak commemoratives of this period — fine silver long abandoned for circulation coinage by this point.
