Weitenegg is a small market town on the Danube in Lower Austria, and this 50 Heller note is a product of the Notgeld wave that followed Austria's post-war monetary collapse. Municipal and local authorities across German-speaking Austria issued their own emergency currency between 1919 and 1922 because the central supply of small-denomination coins and notes simply failed to reach rural communities in usable quantities. Weitenegg's answer was a locally authorized scrip, signed by the Bürgermeister and Vizebürgermeister to give it what legitimacy a market town could muster.
The Jaksch/Pick reference JPR1163a places this within the Lower Austrian Notgeld series — a classification running into thousands of entries, most issued by communities no larger than Weitenegg.
