Weissenkirchen bei Frankenmarkt is a small market commune in Upper Austria, and this 50 Heller note is one of thousands of Austrian Notgeld issues produced between 1919 and 1922 when the postwar collapse of the Habsburg monetary system left rural municipalities scrambling to manufacture their own small-denomination emergency currency. The central government simply could not produce coin fast enough to meet everyday transactional needs in villages of this size.
The Jaksc catalog reference places this within the documented Upper Austrian municipal series. Survival rates for rural Heller Notgeld vary sharply — many were redeemed and pulped, while others were hoarded by contemporary collectors, which is why condition ranges so widely across the same issue.
