Weissenkirchen in der Wachau is a small wine-producing market town in Lower Austria, and this 50 Heller note is one of the thousands of Austrian Notgeld issues that flooded the country between 1919 and 1921. The collapse of the Habsburg monetary system left municipalities scrambling to produce small-denomination emergency currency when coins disappeared entirely from circulation — hoarded, melted, or simply never reminted in sufficient quantity after the war.
Paul Gerin in Vienna was among the most prolific printers of Austrian Notgeld, handling commissions from hundreds of small towns simultaneously. The JPR1158Ib designation suggests this is the second major variety within the Weissenkirchen issue — likely a color or paper variant from a distinct print run.
