Weissenkirchen in der Wachau was one of hundreds of Austrian municipalities forced to print their own emergency small change — Notgeld — after the collapse of the Habsburg monetary system left a vacuum that the new Austrian state could not immediately fill. The Paul Gerin firm in Vienna handled an enormous volume of this communal printing work in the early 1920s, producing issues for villages across Lower Austria that often differed only in the imprint.
The Jaksch/Pick reference JPR1158Ia designates the 50 Heller as part of a recognized local series, suggesting at least one companion denomination was issued under the same authorization.
