| Description du revers | Plain off-white note with a bold square dot-and-dash border enclosing all text. The header panel, itself bordered by a dotted inner frame, bears 'WACHAUER NOTGELD.' in large Gothic display type with '50' at each side, and beneath it 'GUTSCHEIN DER GEMEINDE SPITZ AN DER DONAU.' A block of justified Gothic text sets out the municipality's guarantee obligation and redemption conditions, followed by the anti-counterfeiting warning 'NACHAHMUNG WIRD BESTRAFT.' Three manuscript signatures appear at the foot under the printed titles 'VIZEBÜRGERMEISTER:', 'BÜRGERMEISTER:', and '1. GESCHÄFTSF. GEM.-RAT:'. |

Part of Austria's vast Notgeld wave that flooded the country between 1919 and 1922, this Wachau-region issue was produced by the Marktgemeinde Spitz an der Donau to address the acute small-change shortage that followed the dissolution of the Habsburg monetary system. Hundreds of Austrian municipalities issued their own emergency pfennig and heller notes during this period, but the Wachau series attracted particular collector attention even at the time of issue — they were designed as much for the souvenir trade as for actual use.
Liesl Kinzel's involvement as designer places this firmly in the artistic Notgeld tradition, where local commissions went to trained illustrators rather than commercial engravers. Printed by Göuard Sieger in Vienna.
