One of hundreds of Austrian Notgeld issues that flooded the market after the First World War, when the collapse of the Habsburg economy left municipalities scrambling to produce their own small-denomination scrip to replace hoarded or unavailable coinage. Spitz an der Donau, a wine-growing market town on the Wachau stretch of the Danube, issued this 50 Heller through Eduard Sieger in Vienna — a printer who handled a significant volume of regional Notgeld work during this period.
The designer, Liesl Kinzel, is identified specifically as a Malerin — a female painter — an attribution unusual enough to be worth noting in a field where designers often went uncredited entirely.
