One of thousands of Austrian Notgeld issues printed during the postwar collapse of the Habsburg monetary system, this Spitz note belongs to a distinct regional subset: the Wachau series, which grouped Spitz together with the adjacent village of Dürnstein rather than issuing under the municipality name alone. Eduard Sieger, a Viennese commercial printer and designer, produced the artwork in-house — an unusual consolidation of design and print under one firm, more common in smaller Notgeld contracts than in major state issues.
The 1920 date places this in the second wave of Austrian community currency, after the initial 1919 emergency emissions had already worn thin in circulation.
