The issuer name 'St. Johann im Pongau' is set in large blackletter script across the upper portion, preceded by the printer attribution 'Buchdruckerei' above. St. Johann im Pongau is a small market town in the Salzburg region, and this note belongs to the vast wave of Austrian Notgeld that flooded local circulation after the First World War left the new Republic of German-Austria with a catastrophically undersupplied coin stock. What makes this piece unusual is that the printer and the issuer are the same entity — Rudolf Holzer's print shop both produced and guaranteed the note, an arrangement that collapsed the usual distance between issuing authority and manufacturer into a single signature.
Holzer signed as both parties. Whether that carried any real weight in a town of a few thousand residents is another question.
