The Mikvé Israel-Emanuel synagogue in Willemstad, Curaçao, was consecrated in 1732, making it the oldest synagogue in continuous use in the Western Hemisphere. The 1982 issue commemorates its 250th anniversary. The Dutch Sephardic congregation that built it traces its roots to Jewish merchants expelled from Iberia in the late 15th century, many of whom transited through Amsterdam and Recife before settling in the Dutch Caribbean.
The sand floor inside the building — a deliberate feature, not neglect — is maintained to this day.
