Issued to mark the golden wedding anniversary of Queen Juliana and Prince Bernhard, this coin arrived at a politically awkward moment. Bernhard had spent the previous decade under a cloud following the 1976 Lockheed bribery scandal, in which he admitted accepting $1.1 million in payments from the American aerospace firm in exchange for influencing Dutch military procurement. He had been stripped of his military roles and largely withdrawn from public life. The anniversary issue represents a quiet rehabilitation — official enough to carry a commemorative coin, never quite officially addressed.
