The "Holy Year" series was issued to mark the Catholic Jubilee of 1975, a program that Haiti — under Jean-Claude Duvalier, who had inherited the presidency from his father François in 1971 — used aggressively to court foreign investment and generate hard currency through collector coin sales. These issues were produced almost entirely for export; domestic circulation was never the intent.
