Emergency commercial scrip issued in the aftermath of World War One, when the chronic shortage of small-denomination coinage across France pushed local trade associations to print their own circulating paper. The Union des Commerçants de Béziers was one of hundreds of such bodies that filled the gap — their notes accepted within a defined merchant network rather than through any banking institution.

Printed locally by Cadenat Frères, a Béziers firm, which kept production costs down but also kept quality modest. By 1920 the worst of the coin famine was easing nationally, meaning notes like this had a short functional window before redemption pressure or simple abandonment ended their circulation.
