Djibouti's francs are pegged to the US dollar at a fixed rate that has held since 1973, so the country has little independent monetary policy to express — which may explain the pivot toward exotic collector issues like this one. Titanium at this purity level machines poorly compared to precious metals, requiring specialized dies and slower striking speeds. Few sub-Saharan or Horn of Africa mints have the tooling for it; this piece was almost certainly struck under contract in Europe.
