The 50 fillér survived into the 1990s largely by bureaucratic inertia. Hungary's transition to a market economy after 1989 brought rapid inflation that rendered fractional coinage nearly worthless in purchasing terms, and the fillér denominations were effectively dead money long before they were officially withdrawn. This piece was demonetized in 1999 when Hungary eliminated all fillér denominations entirely, a quiet administrative end to a subdivision that had been economically irrelevant for years.
