Obverse description Within a raised inner circle, the Marzocco — Donatello's celebrated heraldic lion — is depicted in right profile, seated upright with its right forepaw resting upon a shield bearing the Florentine lily (fleur-de-lis), symbol of republican liberty; the sculpture is now housed in the Museo del Bargello, Florence. The field outside the circle carries the circular legend denoting the issuing republic, interrupted and terminated by a stylised Florentine lily device. The design is rendered in high relief with fine sculptural detailing faithful to the original fifteenth-century work.
