Issued to mark the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, this coin was part of a broader German federal program commemorating Luther's 1517 posting of the Ninety-Five Theses — an event whose historical authenticity, ironically, has been questioned by modern scholars, with some arguing the dramatic nailing to the Wittenberg church door was a later embellishment by Philip Melanchthon. Germany issued the coin as legal tender across all sixteen federal states, a politically deliberate gesture given the confessional geography that split the country along Protestant and Catholic lines for centuries following Luther's break with Rome.
