The left half features the denomination '50 EURO' in bold relief against a dark mirror field, with the date '2013' and the mint master mark positioned in the lower portion. The right half displays a stylized map of Europe rendered in low relief, accompanied by a ring of stars referencing the European Union. | Beschrijving keerzijde | The reverse presents a right-facing bust portrait of Hugo Claus, the celebrated Belgian poet, novelist, and playwright, rendered in fine relief against a deeply mirrored proof field. The portrait is detailed and naturalistic, conveying the subject's mature features with close-cropped curly hair and an open collar. To the right of the effigy, the dates '1929' and '2008' denote his birth and death years respectively, accompanied by a small copyright symbol. A facsimile of Hugo Claus's signature appears in flowing script across the lower field, personalizing the commemorative design. |

| Aanvullende informatie |
Hugo Claus, the Flemish novelist and playwright widely considered the greatest Dutch-language writer of the twentieth century, died in March 2008 by euthanasia — a legal option he chose after an Alzheimer's diagnosis. The Belgian state's decision to honor him on a gold coin five years later carried quiet political weight: Claus was a polarizing figure in Flanders, his 1983 novel The Sorrow of Belgium a brutal indictment of wartime collaboration that many Flemish nationalists never forgave.
