| Additional information |
The Pont des Arts footbridge, which crosses the Seine between the Institut de France and the Louvre's Denon wing, became internationally associated with "love locks" — padlocks affixed to its railings by couples — until the sheer weight of an estimated 700,000 locks caused a section of railing to collapse in 2015. Paris authorities removed all remaining locks shortly after. The Phryge series itself was commissioned to commemorate the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, with Phryge adopted as the official mascot, its form derived from the Phrygian cap long associated with French republican iconography.
