Obverse description The obverse features the second royal seal of 1142 of Afonso Henriques, the first King of Portugal, rendered at center. The seal is encircled by the seven castles and five escutcheons (quinas) as borne on the Portuguese national flag, arranged in alternation. The individual letters of the legend PORTUGAL are interspersed around the inner ring, while the mint mark INCM and the date appear within the design. The entire composition is bounded by the twelve stars of the European Union forming the outermost ring.
