Obverse description A detailed panoramic view of the three historic towers of San Marino atop Monte Titano: La Guaita (left), La Cesta (centre), and Il Montale (right), rendered in fine relief against a textured field. The legend SAN MARINO arcs across the upper portion of the coin, with the mint mark R positioned below it at centre. The date of issue appears vertically along the left side of the inner circle. Twelve five-pointed stars encircle the design along the outer border, representing the European Union, with the engravers' initials ELF INC. inscribed in the lower field.

Additional information

San Marino issues its euro coinage under a formal agreement with the European Union, not as an EU member, but as a microstate enclave within Italy granted minting rights by treaty. Its annual production runs are tiny — legal tender throughout the eurozone but almost never spent there, since collectors absorb the entire output almost immediately upon release.

The 2002–2007 "first map" designation refers to the pre-2007 reverse design used across the eurozone before the map of Europe was redrawn to include new member states.
