Obverse description Draped bust of Liberty facing left, wearing a beaded coronet inscribed LIBERTY, with a beaded border at the rim. Seven stars are arranged to the left and six to the right of the effigy, with the date 1877 positioned at the lower rim. The engraver's initial B appears at the neck truncation, attributing the design to Chief Engraver William Barber. The portrait is rendered in high relief with fine classical detailing characteristic of the pattern coinage of the period.
