| Obverse description | Left-facing draped bust of Liberty wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY, rendered in high relief with a beaded border encircling the design. Thirteen stars are arranged along the upper rim, with the date 1877 positioned at the lower rim. The engraver's initial B appears at the neck truncation, attributing the work to Chief Engraver William Barber. The portrait is executed in a refined neoclassical style characteristic of late 19th-century United States Mint coinage. |
