Obverse description Left-facing draped bust of Liberty in high relief, her hair elaborately coiled and curled at the nape with a coronet inscribed LIBERTY. Thirteen six-pointed stars are arranged in an arc around the upper periphery of the field. The date 1877 appears in the lower exergue, and the design is framed by a fine beaded inner border. The portrait is engraved in the neoclassical style by Chief Engraver William Barber.
