Obverse description Left-facing draped bust of Liberty wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY, with a beaded border at the rim. Thirteen stars are arrayed around the periphery, with the date 1877 positioned at the lower rim. The engraver's initial B appears at the neck truncation, attributing the design to William Barber. The portrait is rendered in a neoclassical style characteristic of late nineteenth-century United States coinage.
