The Bahamas gained independence from Britain on July 10, 1973, and the Central Bank moved quickly to establish a gold coinage series that would signal fiscal credibility for the new nation. This denomination was part of that inaugural post-independence issue, released across a window that coincides almost exactly with the tenure of the Bahamas' first government under Lynden Pindling, whose party had swept to power in 1967 ending two centuries of white minority political control.
