| Additional information |
Nello and Patrash are the central characters of A Dog of Flanders, the 1872 novella by the British author Ouida, set in the Flemish countryside near Antwerp. Though largely forgotten in the English-speaking world, the story became a cultural phenomenon in Japan after a 1975 anime adaptation, generating a pilgrimage tourism industry to Antwerp that persists to this day — the city eventually erected a statue of the pair in 2016, driven almost entirely by Japanese visitor demand.
Cook Islands has built a substantial collector market issuing gold and silver pieces tied to beloved fictional and animated properties, particularly those with Japanese fan bases.
