Obverse description The national coat of arms of Costa Rica occupies the central field, depicting three volcanoes rising above a coastal plain with a steamship on the sea in the foreground, flanked by decorative scrollwork and coffee branches. A ribbon above the shield bears the legend AMERICA CENTRAL, while a secondary scroll across the upper shield reads REPUBLICA DE COSTA RICA. Seven stars representing the seven provinces arc above the central scene. The circular legend REPUBLICA DE COSTA RICA reads along the upper periphery, with the issuer abbreviation B.C. C.R. flanking the date 1974 at the base. A fine beaded border runs along the coin's inner rim.
