Beschrijving keerzijde The reverse features a finely detailed depiction of an Osprey (Pandion haliaetus) perched atop a rocky outcropping, gripping a freshly caught fish in its talons, as engraved by Susan Taylor. The bird is rendered in high relief with meticulous feather detail, its head turned slightly to face the viewer. The scientific name PANDION HALIAETUS appears in italic lettering below the central device, with CANADA arcing prominently along the lower field. The denomination 50 CENTS and the date 2000 are inscribed vertically along the right periphery. A beaded inner border encircles the entire design.

Aanvullende informatie

Part of the Royal Canadian Mint's year 2000 commemorative wildlife series, this issue belongs to a program that drew sharp criticism at the time for flooding the collector market — the RCM released so many themed 50-cent pieces through the 1990s and into 2000 that secondary market premiums collapsed almost immediately on most issues. The osprey piece was sold directly to collectors; it never circulated.

Mintage controls on individual releases within the series varied considerably, making KM#391 a thinner entry in most collections than its availability suggests.
